Our four-day trip to tour five of Ohio’s eight presidential sites had covered a lot of miles and little villages. We were now headed on our last day to larger cities that have museums, libraires and collections we did not see in the earlier presidential sites.
Whereas Ulysses S. Grant, William Harrison, and Benjamin Harrison are remembered mostly by restored schoolhouses, homes, work places and their burial sites, the Taft and Harding sites include collections, theaters, collections, libraries and gift shops.
Located approximately 50 miles north of Columbus, Marion, Ohio’s favored son is former president Warren G. Harding. Our 29th president and his wife, Florence, held rallies and his presidential campaign in 1920 from the large sprawling front porch. Folks would come by buggy, wagon train or by foot to stand in any open space in the neighborhood to hear Harding speak. Many photos were saved from what became known as the “Front Porch Campaign.”
