BY CASEY KOZLOWSKI
Commissioner
Ashtabula County

Hello, Ashtabula County. I want to take a moment to recognize one of our county’s greatest traditions, the Ashtabula County Fair that just took place last week.
This year marked the 180th Ashtabula County Fair. That is an incredible milestone and a testament to the generations of families, volunteers, exhibitors, and community members who have kept this tradition going for nearly two centuries.
I had the opportunity to spend several days at the fair this year, and I truly enjoyed being there. It was great to walk around the grounds, visit with so many people, see the exhibits, and support our young people. The fair is always a good reminder of what makes Ashtabula County such a special place.
It was also great to see some important improvements at the fairgrounds this year. The County commissioners assisted with the construction of a new barn using one-time ARPA funds. The new building replaced an old, dilapidated horse barn and will be a valuable addition to the fairgrounds for many years to come.
We had the opportunity to cut the ribbon on the new building the day before the fair opened. The commissioners also assisted with funds for electrical upgrades throughout the fairgrounds. It was great to see these projects completed and ready for everyone to enjoy during this year’s fair.
There was something for everyone, including the animal barns, livestock shows, Market Animal Sale, demolition derby, tractor and truck pulls, livestock scramble, rides, vendors, entertainment, and plenty of fair food.
This year, I also joined with others to purchase a market steer at the Market Animal Sale. It was a pleasure to take part and help support one of our hardworking young exhibitors. These young people put a tremendous amount of time and effort into raising and caring for their animals, and the sale is a great way for our community to recognize that hard work.
Of course, we had some rain during the week, as we normally seem to have during fair week, but it did not stop everyone from having a great time. Despite the weather, there was still plenty of fun, laughter, and time spent together.
An event this large does not happen on its own. I want to thank the fair board members, volunteers, fair staff, 4-H advisors, parents, veterinarians, exhibitors, sponsors, and everyone else who helped make the 180th fair a success. Their hard work begins long before the gates open and continues throughout the entire year.
I especially want to recognize the fair board for everything they do to maintain the fairgrounds, raise funds, organize the events, and preserve this important county tradition for future generations.
As the county’s liaison to the fair board, I am proud to support their efforts and help in any way I can. If you would like to learn more about the fair or find out how to get involved, please visit www.ashtabulafair.com.
Thank you again to everyone who helped make the Fair so enjoyable. I had a great time spending several days there, catching up with people from across the county, and taking part in this annual tradition.
As always, if I can be of assistance as your Ashtabula County Commissioner, please do not hesitate to reach out at 440-576-3750. Thank you.
