GENEVA TOWNSHIP – Signs in honor of Platt R. Spencer will be going up in Geneva Township.
Back at the February Geneva Township trustees’ meeting, the trustees were first approached about the signs when Cathy and Phil Schmidt, representing the Platt R. Spencer Historical Society, spoke to the trustees during the public comment period.
They expressed interest in putting up the signs to coincide with America’s 250th anniversary and asked if the project could be part of the township’s 250th anniversary plans, according to the minutes from the meeting.
Township Trustee Chair Tim Mills asked them to sample designs and said the township would get quotes on signs. It was stated the township could install the signs, the minutes state.
Recently, the signs came up again as a topic of conversation at the June 10th trustees meeting.
Mills said there will be six signs.
He shared a copy of the design, which shows a picture of Platt R. Spencer and a message that states that Geneva Township is the home of Platt R. Spencer, the Father of American Penmanship.
Mills said they will be put up in various places, including in front of the Geneva Platt R. Spencer Elementary School. He was also thinking of putting them up on Route 534, the Roosevelt Drive area, Route 20 (East and West) and Lake Road.
“They’re not bad signs,” he said, noting they have a vintage look.
He said they will be put up before the 250th celebration.
“They want to do it, and I think it’s a good idea,” he said.
According to Mills, the cost for the signs was $360.
“They’re a non-profit (the Platt R. Spencer Historical Society) and they asked us for some help on it, and we said we would put them up and give them some money toward it,” Mills explained.
