ASHTABULA – At the outbreak of the American Civil War, over 320,000 Ohio citizens volunteered to serve in the Federal Army. Over 35,000 eventually became a casualty of the War.
Ashtabula County, too, answered the call of war, with its recruits helping to form the 29th Ohio Infantry Regiment and the 11th New York Light Artillery. These soldiers served on many battlefields and suffered heavy casualties.
Join Professor Dennis Doyle at the Harbor-Topky Memorial Library on 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, for his presentation “Ashtabula County During the American Civil War.”
Professor Doyle’s program will focus on the experiences Ashtabula County soldiers had during their Civil War service. He will also cover such topics as recruitment, training, the battle fought, and the soldier’s motivation to serve.
A Chicago native, Professor Doyle grew up in Joliet, where he still resides. He has a master’s degree in history from American University in Washington, D.C.; a master’s degree in sociology from DePaul University in Chicago; and a bachelor’s degree in history from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Prof. Doyle recently semi-retired from teaching history and sociology at Joliet Junior College in Illinois He is the current VP and former president of the Civil War Round Table of Chicago.
