The Conneaut Police and Fire departments were called to the scene of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle in the 400 block of West Main Road in Conneaut at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 17, according to a press release from the Conneaut Police Department.
First responders found bystanders rendering aid to a 50-year-old Conneaut resident.
“Conneaut EMS, with the assistance of the Kingsville Fire Department, transported the male to University Hospitals Conneaut Medical Center where he was ultimately pronounced dead,” the press release said.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian fled from the scene and was located a short time later by deputies from the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department.
“Conneaut police officers subsequently arrested a 42-year-old Twinsburg man for aggravated vehicular homicide, operating a vehicle while under the influence of a drug of abuse and fleeing the scene of an accident,” the press release said. “He is currently being held in the Conneaut Municipal Jail pending his initial appearance in court.”
The Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as William Dornemann.
The Conneaut Police Department was grateful for the assistance it received during the incident.
“The Conneaut Police Department would like to thank the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office, Kingsville Fire Department, Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol and the numerous citizens of Conneaut who provided assistance in the case,” the press release said.
As a result of the incident and another the day before, the Conneaut Police Department will increase OVI enforcement.
“This is the second serious crash in as many days in the City of Conneaut that has involved an impaired driver,” the press release said. “With the coming summer months, the Conneaut Police Department will be prioritizing OVI enforcement in an effort to keep our citizens safe. Please drive sober.”
