SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP – After graduating from Lakeside High School in 2020, Kaleb McKinney enrolled in barber school, where he spent months learning not only how to cut hair, but also how to connect with people through his craft.
He worked hard, earned his certification, and quickly became known for his patience, skill, positive attitude and dedication to giving back to his community.
Once he completed barber school, McKinney opened KKutz, his barbershop on State Road.
His business has been very successful, which would be enough for most young business owners.
However, McKinney decided to give back to the place that helped shape him—his former junior high school.
Remembering how important confidence can be at that age, he returned to the school with his clippers and supplies and offered free haircuts to students who “purchased” them using their ROAR points.
These points are earned by students for following ROAR expectations:
R – Respectful,
O – Outstanding Academics,
A – Always Safe, and
R – Responsible.
The haircuts do not cost students any money, and when a staff member offered to compensate him, McKinney refused, saying, “Don’t worry about paying me; the kids deserve it.”
Teachers and students alike are inspired by McKinney’s generosity. His visits show students that success can take many forms and that giving back to your community matters.
By using his skills to help others, McKinney proves that following your passion can make a real difference—one haircut at a time.
