CONNEAUT – Signalization at the interchange of Interstate 90 and Route 7 is a matter of when, not if.
The Ohio Department of Transportation has approved traffic signals for the interchange and has slated them to be installed. There will be a long wait, however, before that happens.
“With respect to signalization, ODOT has agreed to incorporate this into the 2027 Urban Paving component, which seems like a long ways out,” Conneaut City Manager Nick Sanford said. “We’re getting the signals, which is good news. It requires engineering design as to the signal timing and the cadences with respect to Gateway Avenue and Love’s Drive.”
The city is seeking solutions as to what can be done in the interim.
“The question is, what can we do in advance, because it is a dangerous intersection,” Sanford said. “Can we get temporary signals installed? Can we get a reduction in speed limit? These are all questions that are currently with ODOT. We’re waiting for an answer.”
The city’s administration understands the issue needs addressed and is attempting to do so.
“We recognize as a city that this is something that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later,” Sanford said. “We just want to make sure that we have all of the potential opportunities that are legally enforceable are enacted. I hope to hear something back from (ODOT) District 4 very soon.”
Ward 2 Councilman Chris Castrilla expressed gratitude to Sanford for continuing to push for solutions at the interchange.
“I’d just like to thank Mr. Sanford for his efforts on Route 7, because that’s been a thing with all of us here,” Castrilla said. “I appreciate you following up on it. I know it’s upsetting that we’ve got to go that far out and you’re looking into signalization. I want to thank you for your efforts. Thank you.”
