WILLOUGHBY – An accident involving a stuck car and an Amtrak train during the early morning hours of Friday, Nov. 17, resulted in no injuries, but impaired driving charges for a Fairfield County man.
According to a press release, Willoughby police officers were dispatched to the CSX railroad crossing near Erie and Depot streets at around 3:30 a.m. Friday morning.
On arrival, officers found a vehicle had been driven onto the railroad tracks and become stuck, then subsequently hit by an Amtrak train.
The driver, Sean Boyden, 58, of Pleasantville, was the sole occupant of the silver 2001 Jaguar. He had exited the car prior to the crash.
No injuries were reported to the Willoughby Police Department at the scene.
According to the crash report, Boyden was driving north on Erie Street, reportedly following his GPS navigator, which instructed him to turn left.
He allegedly made the left turn onto the train tracks, facing west, and became stuck. He exited the vehicle to assess the situation and, while outside the vehicle, a westbound train struck the car.
Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the incident, according to the Willoughby press release.
Boyden was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired, a 1st-degree misdemeanor; and driving on a railroad track, a minor misdemeanor.
As of this publication’s print deadline, Boyden is scheduled to appear for arraignment at Willoughby Municipal Court on Thursday, April 23, at 8:15 a.m.
