ORWELL – The Grand Valley Mustangs baseball team defeated the St. John Heralds 6-5 in extra innings on Wednesday, April 22.
The two teams were locked in a pitching duel early on. However, St. John broke free for three runs in the top of the third inning on a three-run home run by Anthony Severino.
Grand Valley got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs of their own to tie the game at 3-3.
Grand Valley took their first lead of the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 4-3.
The Heralds answered with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Grand Valley responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to force the game into extra innings.
The Mustangs were able to shut out the Heralds in the top of the eighth inning.
Grand Valley then won a on a walk-off RBI single by Carter Turk to win 6-5.
Chase Clutter pitched six innings for the Heralds and gave up five runs, four earned, on ten hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
Carter Beck pitched one and two-third innings of relief and gave up one run on one hit, four walks and four strikeouts.
Payton Plizga pitched six and two-third innings for Grand Valley, Plizga gave up five runs on seven hits, three walks and nine strikeouts.
Cooper Plizga pitched one and one-third innings in relief for Grand Vally. Cooper Plizga earned the win and gave up no ones on one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
