While researching the history of the Ashtabula County Fair, I found clippings and photos in a Fair Scrapbook. The book was not identified by owner, but the pictures are a delight to look over. I knew you readers would enjoy looking back to at past winners and activities as well as the seeing the changes in buildings. These pictures are mostly from 1956-57.
Gone are the days of greased pig and cash-in-the-hay contests. Gone are the days of a huge production of style revues. I believe 4-H clubs are greatly instrumental in the maturity of our county’s youth and develop character, discipline and an awareness of someone or something beyond themselves.
But participation is down as well as the ability to get leaders. The accompanying pictures show the lengths the clubs went to in making floats, taking care of animals and demonstrations of home and farm work. I am proud and admire the leaders and members of 4-H who work hard and see the rewards of their work!
Grange groups still meet and display their items in the Grange building, but the numbers are down. Make sure you support them by viewing their work. The Floral Building is always a treat and the creativeness of the exhibitors is evident.
I hope we always have an Ashtabula County Fair, and as we adapt to the times, customs and traditions, let’s remember the past and its benefits to our youth and our families and the importance of recognizing the importance of our farm community and its impact on our county.
