PAINESVILLE – A group of about two dozen middle-schoolers from Perry, Mentor, Willoughby-Eastlake and private schools from Concord Township paid a visit to the Lake County Administration Building in Painesville Tuesday morning, Feb. 10, to learn how their elected leaders provide services to their constituents.
The event was held in partnership between Lake County and Leadership Lake County.
Government Day provided these young participants a firsthand look at how local government functions and the vital role public service plays in supporting the community.
Leadership Lake County, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering leadership, civic awareness and community engagement among residents of all ages, organized the day to spark interest in government and encourage the next generation of informed citizens.
The students participated in informative tours and interactive sessions with several key county offices: the Treasurer’s and Auditor’s offices, the Board of Elections and Recorder’s Office.
Through these experiences, these students gained practical insights into daily operations, from managing public funds and records to ensuring fair elections and government transparency.
“The event was a resounding success, thanks in large part to the exceptional coordination by Gina Fletcher, youth program director at Leadership Lake County,” Lake County Treasurer Michael Zuren said.
Fletcher’s efforts, in collaboration with Zuren and his team, created a welcoming and educational environment that left a lasting impression on the students.
Zuren said his ongoing commitment to youth education, in programs such as his Student Treasurer of the Day initiative, helped make the day especially meaningful.
“Events like Government Day go beyond classroom learning,” he said. “By bringing young people into the heart of county government, they demystify public service, highlight its importance and inspire civic responsibility.”
As these middle schoolers explored the Administration Building and interacted with public officials, they began to see themselves as potential future contributors to Lake County’s growth and wellbeing.
Leadership Lake County continues to invest in programs that build leadership skills and community knowledge, from middle school initiatives to professional development for adults.
