The last Friday in April of each year, we celebrate Arbor Day. It is a time set aside to encourage planting trees and highlighting their importance.
Earth Week is a week-long focus during April 18-24 that turns attention toward conservation efforts beyond trees.
Since Arbor Day has been celebrated for many, many years, most of us can remember leaving our classrooms and going out on the school yard to watch the planting of a tree.
Often, the tree would be planted in memory of someone or a special event. Such was the case in 1892 when students at the very first Jefferson Education Institute facing East Jefferson Street were overjoyed to leave their classrooms and head to the front lawn to meet a dignitary and hear him speak under the old elm tree that had stood on the school lawn for almost a century.
