ORWELL – Student athletes from the Grand Valley Local Schools basketball and wrestling programs were recognized for their achievements during a Monday, March 16, board of education meeting.
In boys’ basketball, Carter Turk was selected for the First Team All-County and First Team All-NAC. Solomon Schultz was Second Team All-County and First Team All-NAC.
All-County and All-NAC honorable mentions went to Anthony Eason and Payton Plizga.
The girls’ basketball the All County and All District Coach of the Year was Zach Sirrine.
First Team All-County and All-NAC honors went to Cloe Turk. Riley Rowland was selected for First Team All-County and Second Team All-NAC.
All-County honorable mentions went to Breanna Rowland and Reese Nims. All-NAC honorable mentions went to Breanna Rowland and Sophia Thirion.
The All-District First Team include Turk and Riley Rowland. The Second Team featured Breanna Rowland.
In boys wrestling, Joseph Montgomery-Stoltz took first place in the 138-weight class at sectionals.
Luke Giddings and Dexter Plott took second place at sectionals at 215 and heavyweight, respectively. Zeal Waldo Jesse DeLisle won third at 113 and 175, and Ashton Lampman took fourth at 190.
All-County honorable mentions went to Joe Montgomery and Ashton Lampman.
In the inaugural season of Grand Valley’s all-girls wrestling team, Sophia Thirion made program history by becoming the first female wrestler to qualify for districts, earning a third-place finish at sectionals.
Jenna Poyer and Ava Crouser also had strong performances, each earning fifth-place finishes and securing positions as district alternates.
Sophia Thirion was selected for First Team All-County. Ava Crouser and Jenna Poyer were selected for Second Team All-County.
Students of the Month were also honored during the meeting.

Roberta Cozad, director of special programs, reported student fundraising for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund exceeded goals.
After a collection from Pymatuning Valley Schools, which totaled $2,112.81, a video students created to solicit donations from businesses in Ashtabula, going out to local businesses and school fundraising with dress-up days, the total raised was $44,670.28 against a of $42,518, which puts them just over $5,000 for next year to get to $50,000.
Prior to adjourning, the board moved into executive session to discuss negotiations or bargaining sessions with employees, as well as matters required to be kept confidential by federal or state law.
The next regular session meeting of the Grand Valley Local Schools Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at 6 p.m. in the Grand Valley High School Study Hall (Room 200), 111 Grand Valley Ave. W., Orwell.
