ORWELL – The Grand Valley High School Kindness Club and Lady Mustangs basketball team collected socks for people experiencing homelessness in competition with Maplewood High School in Cortland in a SOCK IT TO ‘EM challenge leading up to games in Indiana, according to a report made during a Monday, Jan. 12, meeting of the Grand Valley Local Schools Board of Education meeting.
The group organized a collection of 826 pairs of socks, according to the report.
The collected socks will be offering donations to the Rocket Fuel organization, the Mustang Stable and the Warren Family Mission because of the volume of donations.
In other business:
During an organizational meeting held prior to the regular meeting, Dr. Amanda Dolan, Christa Yuhasz and Douglas Zetlaw took their oaths of office.
Dolan will serve as president of the board for 2026 and Dr. Angelique Morse will be vice president of the board.
The board approved retaining legal services, as needed, for the 2026 calendar year from The Riley Law Firm of Westlake; Ennis, Britton Co., L.P.A. of Cleveland; and Squire, Patton & Boggs, LLP of Cleveland.
No students of the month for December were selected, as the month contained only 14 classroom days.
The board also held discussion on the 2026-2027 draft calendar, which will be largely the same as the current one.
In agenda items:
Approving the fiscal year 2027 alternative tax budget. The budget hearing was held on earlier the same day, at 5:30 p.m.
Accept the following donations to the Mustang Stable Fund:
• Reel’s Auto Sales LLC $4,000
• The Ashtabula Foundation $250
Approving the district’s five-year capital spending plan for the fiscal 2027-2031.
Approving a contract extension for Dr. William R. Nye Jr., superintendent, from Aug. 1, 2025-July 31, 2030.
Approving a memorandum of understanding between the board and the Grand Valley Educational Association.
Prior to adjourning, the board moved into executive session to discuss preparing for, conducting or reviewing negotiations or bargaining sessions with employees.
The next regular session meeting of the Grand Valley Local Schools Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. in the study hall at Grand Valley High School, 111 Grand Valley Avenue West, Orwell.
