GENEVA – It’s been said that good things come in small packages.
For the City of Geneva, that certainly rings true with one of its latest improvements – a tiny pocket park added as part of the Appalachian Community Grant Program (ACGP) streetscape project in the downtown.
The triangular-shaped, brick-paved space at the corner of East Main and South Forest streets features three picnic tables and a raised planter. It’s located across the street from the Geneva Recreation Center.
City leaders are happy with how it looks.
“I think it looks beautiful,” council President John Barbo said. “It turned even better than how I imagined it would.”
“We’re very, very happy with how it’s turning out,” City Manager Joseph Varckette said.
He thought it enhanced the overall downtown.
The pocket park will also be getting a decorative clock.
“Given that it is part of the park design and that we had the opportunity to purchase it with grant funding, it will be installed there,” Varckette said, when asked for comment.
He noted that it will look very similar to the current clock that sits at the main intersection in town, at routes 534 and 20.
He said the current clock, along with the island at the intersection, is scheduled to be removed as a part of the West Main Street Construction Phase II project.
“We’ve been told by the manufacturer that it’s obsolete, and that we cannot get parts for it anymore and that it would eventually cost more to fix than to get a new one,” he said of the current clock.
