Easter celebrated at Jefferson First Baptist Church

JEFFERSON – Sometimes the real meaning of Easter can get lost in all the excitement over candy, Easter eggs and the Easter Bunny.
But not at Jefferson First Baptist Church, where an Easter Celebration was held Saturday March 21.
“We emphasize the true meaning of Easter,” event organizer Brenda Headley said.
She noted that the event featured a skit focusing on what Easter is about.
“It went well,” Headley said.
Garth and Sherry Cornell, who have a Sunday Morning program on WKKY, presented the skit, “Resurrection Power.”
“We wanted to do it because Easter is more than just candy and Easter baskets,” Garth said. “It really is about celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We wanted to get that across to the young kids here today.”
In the skit, Garth said he gloated over a big Easter basket while Sherry, with a smaller Easter basket, was telling him what Easter was all about.
“It’s candy today, but Jesus forever,” he said of the message they shared.
Headley said at least 100 people showed up for the Easter celebration.
“We had a good group,” she said. She noted the egg hunt was divided into four age groups.
Each child took home an Easter basket, eggs and candy.
“They seemed to like it really well,” Headley said. “They got to pick the one they wanted.”
There were also some games for the kids to play and a miniature horse and a goat outside for them to pet.
Also, some older people were able to make a contribution to the event by stuffing eggs at home, according to Headley.
These included some folks in their 90s.
“They look forward to doing it,” she said. “They still feel connected to the church.”
Another thing that Headley liked about the long-time event was seeing kids come back all grown up.
“Some of them are coming and they’re now working here,” she said.
Her granddaughter, Mariah Headley, 23, was one. She ran a game.
“I like volunteering,” she said.
The kids also got their choice of a pillowcase at the event.
Brenda Nick, who headed up a group effort to make the pillowcases, said 116 were made.
She noted the children put a lot of thought into selecting a pillowcase.
“They are so much fun watching them very seriously debate which one to choose,” she said.
In addition, representatives from Camp Koinonia of Cork Cold Springs Road, Geneva, were on hand to tell the kids all about the camp.
One of the representatives, Mallory Gersper, enjoyed being at the event and sharing information about the camp.
“I loved it,” she said. “It’s so warm and welcoming.”
She noted that a lot of great summer camps are planned.
