MENTOR – Superheroes, first responders, community partners, people with developmental disabilities and their families and friends came together for the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities (LCBDD) annual Community Hero Day on Saturday, July 31, at Broadmoor School.
More than 400 people attended, including representatives from 13 police departments and four fire departments, for a day filled with fun, learning and community connection.
Guests had the opportunity to explore fire trucks, police vehicles and other emergency equipment, while enjoying games, face painting, balloon artists and a variety of interactive activities.
Popular superheroes, including Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen, Captain America and Black Widow delighted children and adults alike, posing for photos, giving high-fives and creating smiles throughout the day.
While the event offered plenty of entertainment, Community Hero Day serves a much greater purpose. It is designed to foster positive relationships between first responders and individuals with developmental disabilities.
By meeting in a welcoming, relaxed environment, participants build familiarity, trust and communication that can make a meaningful difference should an emergency ever occur.
“For me, watching the attendees and the ‘heroes’ interact was magical,” Pam Martin, Deepwood Foundation board member, said. “I know this day made a difference for everyone in attendance. We all left with a better understanding and a deeper appreciation of each other. I’m looking forward to next year already.”
“Where else can you meet real-life heroes and superheroes in one place?” said Heather Neibecker, LCBDD/Deepwood investigative services director.
Community Hero Day was made possible through the support of 100+ Women Who Care Lake County, the Deepwood Foundation and community member Luke Farrell.
