Photo from the City of Ashtabula, Ohio - Municipal Government Facebook page In 2021, the Ashtabula City Fire Department applied for a $1 million FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant Award (AFG) to replace its 30-plus year-old ladder truck. In 2023, the City received notice it was awarded the funding. Pictured here, Sutphen Corporation is assembling the fire truck.

ASHTABULA – A big delivery is expected in the City of Ashtabula this Fall.
Ashtabula City Council member Terence Guerriero reported at council’s meeting Aug. 17th that it’s hoped that the city’s new fire ladder truck will arrive in October.
The truck, which has been in the works for about three years, is coming through the Sutphen dealership.
“We don’t have the truck yet, but we’re getting some equipment for it,” Guerriero said, noting the equipment would be outfitted onto the new truck in Columbus.
“And we’re hoping that October (it will arrive),” he added. “We are at the point where they can actually track the building of it, so I think we have a vehicle identification number for it. We’ve already made several payments on this mythical ladder truck, but it is coming, and because we bought it three years ago, a new one is another $500,000, so we are going to make a savings there.”
In 2023, the city obtained a new vehicle and equipment loan from Andover Bank for $860,000 to partially finance the purchase of the fire ladder truck, which has a price tag of $1,860,000.
The remaining $1,000,000 will be paid for by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security (FEMA).
