ASHTABULA – The Ashtabula County Animal Protective League appears to be barking up the right tree with the move of its pet food pantry to the City of Ashtabula.
Back in January, the APL partnered with G.O. Community Development Corporation to move its pet food pantry from the APL in Kingsville Township to the G.O. center at 3703 Station Ave., Ashtabula.
“We felt it was a more central location for people than to drive all the way out here,” Suzanne Viall, APL office manager, said.
Now, people going to the G.O. center at the regular food pantry in the gym can pick up pet food at the Pet Food Pantry while they’re there.
“It’s wonderful,” Viall said. “People are very appreciative. Everything went the first day.”
Drew Thomas, G.O. Community Development president, also thought the arrangement was working out well.
“We never gave out dog food and cat food before, so it’s been great,” he said.
Viall said the APL makes the pet food available at the pet food pantry whenever it has extra food available. She added that pet food is a big need for lower income individuals.
In addition to pet food, the APL also makes other things like collars, cat litter, and leashes available at the Pet Food Pantry when it can.
“Whatever we have to share, we share,” she said.
She noted there has been a good response to the Pet Food Pantry at its new location.
“Everything we have sent down there so far has been picked up,” she said.
She added that any donations of pet food can be brought to the APL, which will be glad to take it to the Pet Food Pantry to be distributed.
