MORGAN TOWNSHIP – The South Central Ambulance District and Morgan Hose Fire Company announced some exciting news last week that affects a handful of fire departments in the area.
On March 23, South Central Ambulance District was notified that SCAD, along with Morgan Hose, the Dorset Volunteer Fire Department, Orwell FD, Windsor FD and Rome FD were chosen to receive the Local Government Capital Safety Grant in the amount of $320,141, Morgan Hose Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Shaun Buehner said.
Buehner said the grant will allow SCAD and the fire departments to upgrade their communications equipment. Each of the fire departments came together and detailed what kind of equipment they needed and pledged to provide a 5per cent match, Buehner said. Buehner then worked their requests into the grant re quest and submitted the information.
“The grant will provide new radios for each department that are capable of providing more advanced communications using the current operating systems, as well as high band and the Ohio MARCS system,” Buehner said. “We’ll have the capability of communicating more efficiently.”
Buehner said the up graded equipment will allow SCAD and the fire departments to communicate using the current very high frequency system and the state’s MARCS system, as well as be in a better position to adjust to any changes Ashtabula County may make in the future.
As for the time frame, Buehner said they have a year to complete the grant.
“Right now, we’re await ing the grant agreement paperwork,” he said.
While they have an idea of what kind of equipment they’ll be getting, Buehner said they also are completing some research on the different types of radios.
“We’re very happy,” Buehner said of the news.
