John Ray Brown, Sr., age 86, died on Thursday, March 9, after a brief illness.
He was born on October 30, 1930 in Sargent, Nebraska, a son of Eyli Sylvester Brown and Edna Hazel (Brodine).
Mr. Brown graduated from Sargent High School in 1949. He served in the United States Navy. Having worked for over 40 years in installing sprinklers, Mr. Brown started out west and landed in the Cleveland area and came to Jefferson in 1967.
On August 17, 1951 he married Joan Marie Tinneman. He had a love for farming raising beef cattle, and dairy farming. Mr. Brown enjoyed hunting and fishing, raising quarter horses, and had a talent for telling stories that he loved to share.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 61 years, Joan M. Brown; two sisters, Dorothy Diment and Lucille Sponal and three brothers, Calvin, Melvin and James Brown.
Survivors include two daughters, Christine M. Cook of Jefferson, Kathy A. (Nick) Glaviano of Kingsville; three sons, John R. (Peggy) Brown, Jr. of Kingsville, Calvin L. (Mary) Brown, Sr. of Cherry Valley and Paul (Charlene) Lott of Dorset; 14 grandchildren, Michelle, Mark, Jamie, Michael, Katie, Kelsey, John III, Crystal, Calvin Jr., Greg, Nick, Teresa, Paul Jr. and Melinda; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and three brothers, Dick Brown, Jack (Carolyn) Brown and Bob (Joyce) Brown, all of Iowa.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 15 at 11 a.m. at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 134 Prospect Street, Andover. Burial will follow in Cherry Valley Cemetery.
