GENEVA – The Geneva Eagles girls basketball team fell 43-33 to a spirited NDCL Lions basketball team.
The Eagles were playing once again without their leading scorer Hailey Peoples who is out the rest of the season with an injury. To make things worse the Lions were coming off a big tournament win over the Jefferson Falcons.
The two teams started slow as Geneva led 4-2 after one quarter of action. Jordan Vencill and Emily Corlew scored the only baskets for the Eagles in the opening quarter. Erin Brownlee scored the only basket for the Lions in the opening quarter. NDCL outscored Geneva 18-7 in the second quarter for a 20-11 halftime lead. Summer Salem had a big quarter for the Lions with ten points, including a pair of three-pointers. Lexi Hammer added four points, Sarah Fox added a bucket and Maggie Rahill and Annie Carney each hit a free throw.
The Lions continued to impress in the third quarter as they went up 31-18. Lexi Hammer led the way with four points and six rebounds. Olivia DeJohn, Brownlee, Fox and Rahill also scored for the Lions in the third quarter. Geneva struggled to get going offensively as Emily Harriman scored three points in the quarter, Alex Schafer knocked down a jumper and Miranda Francis hit a pair of free throws.
Geneva put up 15 points in the final quarter, but they were still unable to match the intensity of the Lions in the fourth quarter. Summer Salem added two more three-pointers for the Lions as she finished with 15 points. Lexi Hammer added five points in the quarter, including a three-pointer of her own. Hammer finished with 13 points. Hope Stanley led the Eagles with four points in the fourth quarter. Kylee Clint added a three-pointer, but the Eagles were unable to come back in the game.
Miranda Francis led the Eagles in scoring with 7 points to go with 8 rebounds. Jordan Vencill and Emily Harriman each added six points With the loss the Eagles ended their season at 13-10. The Lions improved to 12-11 with the win.
