SAYBROOK - The St. John Heralds won their division IV sectional semifinal girls basketball game against Newbury to move on and face Lutheran East.
The win for the Heralds was the first in tournament play since 2008. The Heralds looked to have the game well in hand with a 16 point lead in the fourth quarter. However, the Black Knights made everyone in the gym hold their breath as they were able to trim the game all the way to two points. In the end the Heralds were able to hold on for the close 34-32 win.
The two teams struggled to score in the opening quarter s St. John led 6-4. Sydney Carpenter scored three points for the Heralds on a three pointer in the first quarter. Natalie DeCato scored the only other basket and Madyson Paradie added a free throw. Sarah Zembiak and Haley Hamilton each scored baskets for Newbury in the first quarter. The scoring didn't improve much in the second quarter as St. John took a 12-6 lead into halftime. Cheyanne Bosse scored four of the Heralds six points in the second quarter. Madyson Paradie added the only other basket. Haley Hamilton scored the only two points for the Black Knights in the second quarter.
The Heralds held the Black Knights to only two more points in the third quarter on a basket by Becca Craven.
St. John only added six points to their total, but they still led 18-8 heading into the final quarter. Sydney Carpenter paced the Heralds with fie points in the quarter, including her second three-pointer of the game.
The Black Knights outscored the Heralds 24-16 in the final quarter, but fell just short in the 34-32 loss.
Sarah Zembiak tried to help the Black Knights come back with seven points, including a three-pointer. Hannah Grubbs added six points for Newbury. Haley Hamilton added five points, including a three-pointer.
Madyson Paradie led the Heralds with six points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals in the final quarter. Paradie finished the game with ten points and a team high 11 rebounds. However, it was a put back by Cheyanne Bosse that helped secure the win for the Heralds. Bosse had four points in the quarter to go with four rebounds. Bosse finished the game with six points and nine rebounds. The Heralds were in control of the game thanks to 12 points from Sydney Carpenter early in the game.
With the win the Heralds improved to 12-10 on the season and advanced to play Lutheran East.
With the loss the Black Knights fell to 5-18 on the season.
