Cardinal Cares Initiatives

by Robin Luthanen

MADISON – MADISON – A local nursing home and rehabilitation facility will use polka and pastry to initiate a week of random acts of kindness.

“Polka is just a fun social to kick off Random Acts of Kindness Week,” said Denise Caswell, marketing director for Cardinal Woods Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
The facility will host its Pie & Polka event at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at 6831 Chapel Rd. Mike Wojtila will provide music.
“A couple of years ago, we had 10 or 12 people from the community,” Caswell said. “Mike Wojtila, he has a very loyal following.”
This polka and pastry-centered event also represents the center’s 2018 premier of its Cardinal Cares Initiatives.
“While we have always been involved in the community and would sponsor and/or support events here and there, it wasn't anything formal,” Caswell said. “With Cardinal Cares, we will be seeking out more ways to get involved in the community, not only through sponsorship of events but fundraisers, etc. For example, we recently signed up for a meals-on-wheels adopt-a-route. Random Acts of Kindness Week seemed like the perfect time to kick it off.”
During the week of Sunday, Feb. 11 through Saturday, Feb. 17, Cardinal Woods employees will be busy throughout the community. Discussions have included ideas such as dropping off food to shut-ins, with names from Lake County Council on Aging; going through Giant Eagle’s parking lot and helping people with groceries; or even going through the drive thru at one of the fast food restaurants and paying for the car behind, Caswell noted.
“There definitely will be food involved,” she said. “We may drop food baskets to multiple places. We know we will be out doing things.”
She added that a second musical group, Katie and the Cruisers (1950’s and 60’s music from Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, and others), will perform at 2 p.m. on Fat Tuesday (Feb. 13), and this also is open to the community.
“Our community has always supported us and in turn we are striving to be more community service minded,” she concluded.
For information regarding either musical event, contact Caswell at (440) 855-0378.
